A US$400m gas-fired plant boosts Africa's energy needs

Posted on : Tuesday, 7th July 2015

The Côte d’Ivoire republic has commissioned a US$400m gas-fired plant at the Azito Energie. This comes at a time when the nation is focusing on the expansion of energy infrastructure and development to enable the country to export power to the neighbouring countries such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone given that the current power export from Côte d’Ivoire goes to Ghana, Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso.
The cote d ivoire energy consumption is expected to rise by 10% a year, therefore, the country aims at becoming the regional hub for power supply. This is according to the Minister of Oil and Energy. However, for the country to achieve its power agenda, the nation requires about US$20bn towards the power investment for the next 15 years.

Currently, the nation has a total adequate power supply capacity of about 1,772MW and the supply amount is expected to increase to 4,000MW of power by 2020. The nation has been ranked to be Africa’s fastest growing economies together with Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo.
